Bilbao welcomes municipalities from throughout Europe to design together the future of equality, diversity and inclusion policies at local level

From 11 to 13 June, Bilbao City Council and EUDEL is hosting the Conference of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), which will bring together 500 mayors, regional and local leaders, European institutions and international organisations.

Representatives of over 40 countries, mainly from Europe, but also from other continents including The Americas, Africa and Asia, will be taking part. The largest delegations will be from Germany, Sweden, Belgium, France and Finland, which are advanced countries in equality and social wellbeing policies.

The Bilbao Conference is at the heart of the debate on the Europe of the Future and aspires to set a new milestone for the transformation of the European social landscape, by means of policies closer to the citizens and which are people focused.

The most innovative contribution will be the “intersection” between the three thematic areas to develop more inclusive, diverse and equal municipalities for everyone, beyond their differences. Europe’s three cross-linked core values are vital for progress in well-being, coexistence and social cohesion.

The programme of 33 sessions, round tables and parallel workshops, will be the opportunity for European municipalities to share best practices. Basque experiences will account for half the sessions.

The Conference will be opened by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, the Basque Premier, on Monday 11 and with the keynote speech by Rigoberta Menchú, the Nobel Peace Prize winner. It will end with the presentation of the Conference Conclusions document on 13 June.
